The Canvas Works invents retractable shade sail.
Everyone knows the basic rules of sun exposure. Wear your sunscreen, put on a hat, or just stay out of the sun. Kids are some of the most vulnerable to the sun’s rays, and it’s often tough for children to follow these rules while at school. One thing that will hopefully never change is that kids play outside during the school day. What should change is their access to shady areas in a climate that is increasingly heating up.
The Canvas Works was recently asked to help a San Geronimo Valley Nursery School toshade a portion of their playground. Mike Casey, the owner of The Canvas Works, was chatting with his long time friend Louis Torelli, an educational consultant, about PlaySpaces for Children. Taking his knowledge of canvas and sailing, Mike designed and constructed a Retractable Shade Sail.
Mike’s idea was to work with a tried-and-true system used in sailing for 35 years.
A Roller Furler was the perfect choice for adapting to his shade sail design. Taking the furling system of a standard sail and turning it horizontal would allow the school to have a beautiful, safe and practical shade area to protect kids from the hot sun. And better yet, it would be easily retractable for times they didn’t need shade.
Research time was spent analyzing wind loads and seasonal sun declination to properly design a system that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
Made from top of the line Schaefer sail hardware and high tech Polyfab awning fabric, the new TCW shade sail is fabulous, functional and non obtrusive.
Surrounded by sailboats, Mike and his team have worked hard to learn from the technical and practical hardware that is used everyday to make boats function with ease. We recognize the importance of shade coverage not only for schools, but for all areas of our lives. Consider a Retractable Shade Sail for your patio, commercial property or institution.
