Carey, a Marin local, came to us to discuss the need to shade her home’s main living space with great southern exposure. She wanted a sense of privacy and yet have enough light transparency not to darken the space. Marin, being surrounded by water, calls out for a design that incorporates the local seafaring history that helped to build the Bay Area.
Carey brought the concept of utilizing a used sail and marine hardware to our team, to design and fabricate nautical curtains. We went to work researching the most effective way to reuse the cloth and create a functional, easy to use shade that could be rolled up and stowed. After a few trips to local sail lofts, Pineapple Sails offered up the best option in a light weight used headsail.
A couple tricks made this project successful. Placement of color was critical to making the shades look professional and creative. Fine tuning the hardware for hanging and rolling made the shades practical and easy to use. And finally, the recycled sail cloth turned out to be the perfect fabric choice for giving Carey ample privacy without blocking out the sunlight.
With their geometric pops of color, these shades are something seen out of a design magazine. The simplicity in aesthetic and function is what makes them so inventive and fun. Take a look at the final outcome. If you are interested in creating this project on your own, or with our help, give us a call. Our roll-able screens can work as dividers, porch shades, privacy panels, window treatments, or enclosures.
